Blog 1: COVID, What Now?

What we finally know one year later! Who would have thought vitamins would be the forerunner of treatment. Really is it so surprising? One of my first posts on my Facebook page under Tendercare Pediatrics was what vitamins I thought would help fight off Coronavirus. Those posts are still there. Feel free to read them.

Finally mainstream medicine is catching on that vitamins are useful in preventing disease. I remember being scorned for checking and supplementing vitamin D 10 years ago. Insurance companies refused to pay for this test, and still do depending on the insurance company. Now if you are hospitalized with COVID, some hospitals are supplementing with 100,000IU of vitamin D3 because they have found that people with low vitamin D levels have a higher incidence of mortality. In modern medicine, no one should have vitamin D levels below 30. This should be routine for every medical doctor to be on top of. Yet most people will never have their levels checked.   Any adult over 100 pounds should be on 5000IU Vitamin D3 especially in the North East in the winter time.  If you live in the South and worship the sun 1000IU of D3 may be enough.  Everyone should have their levels checked.  Keep your D3 between 30-60.  Vitamin C is also beneficial.  Again over 100 pounds 1000mg is fine.  Zinc is probably the most important to supplement for COVID.  Over 100 pounds 25-50mg of Zinc is fine.  Oil of Oregano is also not a bad idea and can be taken in capsules or liquid, as well as 3mg of melatonin.  So much good stuff, yet all so underutilized.  I truly believe that the vitamins I take have kept me healthy for the past 15 years, as well as the continued exposure to viruses through my pediatric germ carriers!

So now the dilemma that I am facing is do I take the COVID vaccine. Over the past year I have been in contact with sick COVID patients on a daily basis. I have not even had a cold in the past 10 years. Do I take the vaccine away from people that really need the vaccine. The elderly, the sick, the immunocompromised? It just seems unethical to me. I have had children with COVID pull off my mask while swabbing their noses and fighting with me, and still no COVID. I do not take the Flu vaccine for the same reason. I have not gotten the Flu ever, and in Flu season we never wear masks. Why should I take the vaccine away from someone more in need. I have waited a year, I think I can wait a little while longer. I am a healthy, athletic, mid 50 white woman on no medications with no risk factors.  I guess I am ok with the protocol I have been following for the past year so that one of the 4000 daily causalities can take my place until my turn comes!
